Irish bar Lefty O’Doul’s will be hosting a wake for John Toomey, the well-loved character who served as Santa Claus at Macy’s Union Square for twenty years until he was infamously fired last December for telling some uptight adults a semi-baudy joke. Toomey, 69, passed away last week.

If you see people rappelling off the Grand Hyatt hotel in downtown this Friday and Saturday, you won’t be imagining things. And it’s not some elaborate stunt either. Created as an event to benefit the Special Olympics Northern California, the public is being invited to rappel 425 feet (that’s 36 floors) from the hotel’s rooftop.
