Posted by Keith Mizuguchi on Dec 12, 2012 | Comments (0)

Twitter is apparently taking over the world as on Wednesday, Pope Benedict XVI sent his first tweet to his more than 800,000 followers.

“Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart,” read the initial tweet.

The 85-year-old pontiff is tweeting in eight languages (Twitter handle is @Pontifex) and sent his first message from a tablet computer in the Vatican. He has since sent several other tweets.

During the day, Pope Benedict XVI is expected to respond to questions that include the hashtag #Askpontifex.

The Vatican has said the pope will use Twitter to engage followers of the Roman Catholic Church.
