Doyle Drive To Close Over Weekend

Posted by Keith Mizuguchi on Apr 25, 2012 | Comments (0)

The main approach to the Golden Gate Bridge is coming down for good this weekend which could mean traffic headaches for drivers in San Francisco.

Doyle Drive will be closed on Friday, April 27 at 8 p.m. and is scheduled to be reopened in time for the Monday morning commute at 5 a.m. on April 30. But drivers will encounter an entirely new roadway.

As Doyle Drive is being torn down, a temporary bypass will be put in place connecting to the existing Phase One structures (southbound bridge and tunnel). This will be in place until completion of the northbound bridge and tunnel, which is expected by 2015.

The $1.1 billion Presidio Parkway project is a necessary one as Doyle Drive, which was originally built in 1936, has been deemed structurally and seismically deficient.

Officials with the project said that the best thing to do is to avoid the area, particularly 19th Avenue and Highway 1, which are expected to be especially packed. They also suggest using alternate routes such as the Bay Bridge or Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.

Ferry service between San Francisco, Larkspur and Sausalito will be increased over the weekend and bus service will be modified near the corridor.  Officials said that if you need to use the Golden Gate Bridge, just be patient and expect some slow traffic and plenty of delays.
