This week marks the official start of the baseball season (yes, I know the A’s and Mariners played two games in Japan, just didn’t have that Opening Day feel). And the San Francisco Giants have made several upgrades to improve the fan experience in 2012.
AT&T Park’s Promenade Level (the main concourse and only level where all fans can walk completely around the stadium) has undergone significant capital improvements. Circulation space has been added and views to the field have been restored by relocating concession stands away from the field-side of the concourse. There is also new lighting and signage. Restrooms have been reconfigured and more space has been added to the restroom in left field. And the Fan Lot Bridge, which connected the Promenade concourse to the Coca-Cola Fan Lot, has been replaced by Ghirardelli Square South. The new space spans the entire width of the fan lot and will feature an additional location for Ghirardelli sweets and sundaes, along with an adjacent full service concession stand.
Club Level patrons will also have a few new amenities. In partnership with Virgin America (now named the Virgin America Club Level), there is a new paint scheme and improved lighting. There will also be a redesigned and upgraded Virgin Flight Deck, an outdoor club-like environment located behind sections 229 and 230. This area will include new seating, the Widmer Brothers Fan Haus bar and two fire pits surrounded by wind screens. Another cool aside: Virgin America has also unveiled the newest member of its fleet – an Airbus A320 named “Fly Bye Baby,” named and painted in honor of the Giants. The plane launches into service on April 2 and Giants games and feature programming will also be carried on Virgin.
Promotional days are always popular at the ballpark and there are plenty to choose from this season. Bobblehead giveaways include Sergio Romo (May 5), a 2002 SF Giants Player Bobblehead (June 30), Madison Bumgarner (July 15) and Pablo Sandoval (August 26). The team is also giving away garden gnomes (Brian Wilson and Sandoval) this year. Some of the other special events include two World Series reunions (the 1962 team on April 13 and the 2002 team on July 1) and a Turn Back the Century game on June 2 (the Giants and Cubs will be wearing uniforms styled from 1912).
It should be a fun and exciting season all the way around for the San Francisco Giants and their fans.
