Posadas on 24th Street

If you see a gaggle of kids singing carols at the various storefronts that line lower 24th Street in the Mission this evening then you ran into Posadas. And, no, I don’t mean Jorge Posada famed Yankees catcher – I’m referring to Las Posadas, a Latin American celebration during the nine days preceding Christmas.

Basically, it’s a reenactment of the The Nativity. It’s nine-day celebration with origins in Spain that is celebrated mostly in Mexico and Guatemala…and now on 24th Street!

According to the event organizers:

Children and adults will proceed down lower 24th Street, singing traditional Christmas songs and visiting local merchants along the route. People of all cultures are welcome to come and participate; song lyrics will be provided, along with candles and sparklers for the procession. 5:45 — Gather at the corner of 24th and Capp Streets. 6:00 — Procession begins. 7:00 — Community celebration at the Brava Theater (2781 24th Street, at the corner of York Street) with free food and drink, music, and piñatas for the kids.
